Although the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, the current town was probably established by the Lombards. By the 13C the town and its port were thriving. The oldest surviving church, Santa Maria della Croce, was built in the 15C. The arrival of the railway line in the mid 1800s made the area into a sought-after seaside resort, with noted architect Antonino Liberi designing the Palazzo della Sirena, to this day a symbol of Francavilla. Attracted by the beauty of the town, the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti based his studio in a former Franciscan convent (now known as the Michetti convent), which became a centre of art and culture: Gabriele D’Annunzio spent time there, as did the author Edoardo Scarfoglio, the composer Paolo Tosti, the anthropologist Antonio De Nino, Michetti’s fellow painters Basilio Cascella and Arnaldo Ferraguti, and the sculptors Nicola D’Antino and Costantino Barbella. Still privately owned, the Michetti Convent is occasionally open to the public in summer for cultural events.
