General Forio di Ischia is the largest and most populated of the six small towns on the Italian island of Ischia and is located on the west coast of the island of Ischia. There are almost 18,000 inhabitants within the municipality of Forio and the port of Forio has direct ferry connections to Naples.
Forio is a favorite among visitors to the island both for its beautiful beaches (including the famous Baia di Citara) and for its charming historic center with noble palaces, art shops and small craft shops. Forio Ischia is considered the cultural heart of the island and is full of craft and art workshops, and a number of cultural events are held here every summer.

One of the main attractions in Forio is La Mortella Gardens, a "garden museum" created by the English Walton family and opened to the public in 1990. There are more than 3,000 plant species in the garden, some exotic and rare, and a number of fountains and ponds. Concerts are held outdoors in the summer.

Forio is famous for its sunsets over the sea, best seen from the terrace in front of the Chiesa del Soccorso. If you're lucky, you may even see the rare 'green ray' as the sun sinks below the horizon.
Another top attraction in Forio is the famous Giardini Poseidon, one of the most popular thermal parks on Ischia. You can spend a whole day here relaxing in the thermal water pools, the springs and on the Citara beach.

Sorgeto Bay, located in the nearby village of Panza, has hot springs bubbling up directly from the seabed, so you can enjoy a mixture of hot spring water and cold seawater here for free, one of the most unique experiences on the island.

A must-see in Forio are the Saracen watchtowers, built along the coast centuries ago. The most famous is Torrione.

Forio is also home to a number of historic churches, including the Chiesa del Soccorso, Santa Maria di Visitapoveri and the Papal Basilica of San Vito Martire, known by locals as the Church of San Vito.

Forio has a harbor where ferries from the Naples port of Beverello dock all year round. This ferry is the easiest way to reach Forio d'Ischia, of course, but you can also take a ferry from places like Capri, Positano or Amalfi to one of the other ports on the island (Ischia Porto or Casamicciola) and then reach Forio by land from there.
