Description
This magnificent medieval castle in Emilia Romagna stands on imposing rocky spurs overlooking the Marecchia valley, offering a 360° extraordinary view of the surrounding landscapes. Built in the 12th century, the castle, initially owned by the church, later passed on to various noble families, including the Malatesta. After the Second World War, due to partial collapses, the property was purchased by a family of farmers.
In 2000, a vast renovation was undertaken, returning the building to its former glory. Today, the fortress houses a tourist-accommodation structure on three levels, with a modern restaurant and a hotel with 13 air-conditioned rooms, expandable to 70. A large panoramic room on the upper floor completes the offer. Surrounded by a 1.8-hectare park, the property covers an area of 3,000 square meters.
Traces of the ancient fortifications remain, including two circular towers, a cistern, and part of the original walls. It is said that in the dungeons of the fortress Gianciotto Malatesta was killed, the man who, consumed by jealousy, murdered his wife Francesca and his brother Paolo, protagonists of Dante's famous Inferno episode. Currently, the castle is suitable for transformation into conference centers, wellness facilities, or exclusive residences.
