Description
Civitavecchia, the highest point in Arpino, dates back to pre-Roman times and is a listed archeological site with striking views. The megalithic walls around it and its pointed entry gate were all originally built by the Volscians some seven to eight centuries BC. Continuously occupied ever since then - some twenty-eight centuries - Civitavecchia is now guarded by a medieval tower, which watches over its quiet cobbled streets and old stone churches. A private church still owned by the Pesce family, who commissioned its construction several hundred years ago, stands by the entrance through the stone town walls.
Although a listed archeological site, Civitavecchia is still a thriving small community inhabited all year round with each very old stone house beautifully maintained. In summer, flowers and window boxes abound. Residents can drive along the cobbled main street which loops through the little village and park outside their homes, but as no other traffic is permitted, there is a charming feeling of tranquility.
Casa dell'Acropoli is a potentially charming 130 sq.mt. old stone house located in the heart of Civitavecchia. With 6 rooms configured over 2 levels, although still classified as habitable, the property is now in need of complete modernisation. There is also an unrestored stone 'cantina' (above ground cellar). with exposed stone, which would make a magnificent enteraining area.
In front of the entrance to the house there is a small private garden of approximaely 30 square meters.
Although in a typical historic alley, the property can be reached by car which can be parked nearby. The enchanging historic town centre of Arpino is only a few minutes dirve, providing ready access to shops, restaurants, cafés and services. Rome and its wo airports are only a 90 minute drive.
ARPINO AND THE CIOCIARIA
Arpino is one of the major medieval hilltop towns in the area of Italy called the Ciociaria, the name given to the fertile land that lies south of Rome but north of Naples, situated inland in the hills in the heart of Italy.
The Ciociaria region is within easy reach of both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day's shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter drive brings you to the charming beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the heat of the summer. And at the other extreme of temperature, although Arpino itself is temperate, less than an hour's drive brings you to the winter ski slopes.
Often overlooked, both by tourists and by those foreigners in search of an Italian home, in favour of the more publicized regions of Tuscany and Umbria, the Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt gem with beautiful scenery and medieval hilltop towns. A home or second home in the Ciociaria, in the hilltop towns of Arpino, Veroli, Alatri or in the rolling countryside that surrounds them, will afford you a setting where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic rural Italian lifestyle, where you can still discover the 'real' Italy and take time out from the busy crowds of the larger tourist cities, while being less than ninety minutes journey from central Rome or either of Rome's two airports.
