Soriano nel Cimino is 4 km away.
Soriano nel Cimino, developed at the foot of the Orsini Castle (XIII century), located on top of a hill, overlooks the Tiber valley on a side, opening towards the Central Apennines, and on the other side it is mounted on the Mount Cimino, in such a position that gave it the name of "Perl of Cimino".
Its good position on top of a hill (509 metres above sea level), the mild climate, the healthy fresh air of the woods, its history, traditions, together with the exquisite hospitality and the natural beauty that surrounds it, make Soriano nel Cimino the ideal place where to spend a pleasant stay and a calm holiday all year round.
Soriano still preserves today old architectural and artistic treasures that testify a thousand-year-old history and culture: The Orsini Castel, built in the 13th century; the Papacqua fountain of 16th century and the wonderful Chigi Albani Palace built between the half of 1550 and the beginning of 1700 (at the moment the last two monuments are not open, they are about to be restored). Soriano also hosts the old medieval Romanic Church of Misericordia located at the foot of the castle, the ancient Romanic church of San Giorgio, the 18th century churches of SS. Trinità (S. Agostino), S. Eutizio and San Nicola di Bari (Cathedral of Soriano); the 17th century Church of Santa Maria del Poggio and the various archeological ruins of the Forest of Malano and Corviano; the Medieval village of Chia, the Catacombs of the Sanctuary of S.Eutizio, in the homonymous hamlet.
The Mount Cimino (1053 metres above sea level), with its centuries-old and shady chestnut trees, the wonderful and majestic Faggeta that surrounds it on the top and the famous "Sasso Naticarello", is the ideal destination for those who love nature and tranquility, but also for those who want to spend time in long walks, horse rides or trips on a mountain bike.
The history starts far away, as traces of settlements of various ages show: from prehistory to the Etruscans and the Romans. After numerous invasions of the Goths, Lombards and Saracens, between the V and VIII century, only in XIII century, a sort of urban aggregate appeared, when the near city Viterbo got privileged for the presence of the Pope. Around 1250, the fortified village welcomed the family of the young Rosa, exiled from Viterbo under the order of Frederic II's Ghibellines.
The memories of her presence and holiness are still alive among the population of the place. A real building, social and economic development is connected to the reconstruction of the Orsini Castle, at the time of the Pope Niccolò III, who stayed various times in Soriano, until he died in 1280.
Later on, thanks to Rodrigo Borgia, the feud passed to the Spanish Didaco of Carvajal who was the victim of one of the most spectacular betrayals of those times: he was killed the night of November 7th, 1489 by Paolo Cardini da Vignanello who, under false pretences, managed to penetrate in the Castel.
However, the unwary usurper paid with his own life. In fact, he was caught by the population and hurled down from the highest tower. The episode is recalled every year, on the occasion of the Festival of the Chestnut ( first three weeks of October), considered as one of the most beautiful and evocative historical events in Italy.
LAZIO
The Lazio region of Italy is home to the country's capital city, Rome. There are more than 5.5 million people living in this part of the country. The region is located on the western coast of the country and shares border s with Tuscany, Marche, Abruzzo and Umbria, amongst others. Rome is the largest urban area in the region and most other towns are small. The region is divided into five provinces for administrative purposes.
The climate of the area is mostly mild, with warm summers and mild winters. Summers see very little rainfall, with the highest levels in November and December.
Many people choose Rome, both as a retirement destination and for work. The city has everything that is needed for daily life. There are quieter districts of the city which are ideal for those who want a quieter retirement, although the city offers many opportunities for a busy social life. The rural areas outside the city and in the other provinces are ideal for those who are looking for a traditional Italian way of life.
For those who want to establish their own business in the region, there are many options. The city of Rome has established businesses which are for sale, although there are opportunities for those who have a trade to establish their own business. In the rural areas, there are properties which are suitable for conversion to small hotels or B&Bs, and there are many properties with land for those who want an agricultural based business.
