DESENZANO DEL GARDA
On the southern shores of Lake Garda, fanned out on the first circle of the morainic amphitheater, Desenzano is an enchanting town and a pleasant seaside resort. An excellent starting point for trips and excursions, Desenzano has an artistic, historical and archaeological heritage that has its roots in Roman times. In the Middle Ages it was the object of bitter struggles between Brescia and Verona, in the fifteenth century it then passed under the dominion of Venice, becoming a thriving commercial center in modern times. The heart of the city rises around Piazza Malvezzi and the Porto Vecchio, embellished by the sixteenth-century palaces of the Brescian architect Giulio Todeschini.
Not to be missed: the archaeological area, which houses the remains of a magnificent Roman villa from the 4th century. AD with splendid polychrome mosaic floors, the Archaeological Museum, with one of the oldest plows in the world, the panoramic tower of S. Martino della Battaglia. Remarkable works can be admired in the chapel of the Cathedral, which preserves important masterpieces by Andrea Celesti (1637-1712 ca.) and "The Last Supper" (from 1738) by Gian Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770). We point out the Castle, founded perhaps already in the early Middle Ages and rebuilt in the sec. XIV-XV, recently recovered and from which one can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Lake Garda. Villa Brunati has also been restored and since 2007 used as a municipal multimedia library.
In recent decades, Desenzano has also become the most renowned town on Lake Garda for its vitality and entertainment offer, thanks to a large and varied presence of restaurants, bars, disco bars and discotheques. The city also offers the opportunity to practice all water sports (in particular windsurfing, sailing and diving) and there are riding stables and tennis and golf courses. Desenzano is a tourist destination for everyone: from families with children to couples on a romantic getaway, from young people to seniors.
