Puegnago sul Garda
The town is located in the natural amphitheater of the Valtenesi Morainic Hills; very rich in meadows and woods and sunny, it offers views of the lake and Mount Baldo. The Municipality is made up of six hamlets: Castello, Mura, Palude, Monteacuto, Raffa and San Quirico. Castello is a central hamlet because it is the seat of the Town Hall and the Parish; the Municipal Library, the Post Office and the Pharmaceutical Dispensary. There is also a private nursery school and a medical clinic. As evidenced by the archaeological finds and the presence of stilts found near the lakes of Sovenigo, the town was inhabited since the Bronze Age. The name seems to derive from the Latin for persona Popinius, (hence Popiniacus and the medieval toponym Puviniaco); the vestiges of a Roman villa found in 1971 date back to the Roman period (first century BC) and, according to evidence from the 10th century, it seems that a temple dedicated to the goddess Vittoria was also erected. During the 10th century the inhabitants built a fort with a vaguely hexagonal irregular plan in order to face the incursions of Nordic populations, particularly of Hungarian origin. Equipped with towers, one of them was transformed into the current bell tower. In the fifteenth century it passed from the Visconti lordship to the dominion of the republic of Venice, up to the Napoleonic and then Austrian occupation. Then followed the historical events following the unification of Italy. The Castle of Puegnago del Garda is interesting. The typical cuisine uses extra virgin olive oil D.O.P. (a type of Lombard oil) and D.O.C. of these places, of which the "Groppello" is the emblem. In summer a fair is dedicated to these excellences; a traditional dish is represented by Puegnago gnocchi, made with bread and flavored with basil, served in tomato sauce.
