The municipality borders Peschiera del Garda to the south-east and Desenzano del Garda to the south-west. The lakeside section borders Lazise and Castelnuovo del Garda to the east and Padenghe sul Garda to the north.
The historic centre is at the northern end of a long, narrow peninsula about four kilometres long that bisects the southern lake shore, and is also an island, as it is isolated from the peninsula by a navigable moat, which is crossed by only one access route, a bridge.
It still retains a medieval urban structure, with narrow, irregular streets. Since the 1970s, there has been a succession of architectural interventions (first the Grifone and Speranza hotels) to the exterior walls of the buildings, which have restored their more ancient appearance, with exposed brick and stone.
