The historic center is at the northern end of a long, narrow peninsula about four kilometers long that bisects the southern lake shore, and it also takes the form of an island, since it has been isolated from the peninsula by a navigable moat, which is crossed by a single access route, a bridge.
It still retains a medieval urban structure, with narrow, irregular streets. Since the 1970s there have been (first case that of the Grifone Hotel and the Speranza Hotel) architectural interventions to the exterior walls of the buildings, which have restored their older appearance, with exposed brick and stone. And a restricted traffic area, one could say it is a pedestrian's paradise.
