From Meina, in Roman times, passes the Via Severiana Augusta, a consular Roman road that connected Mediolanum (the modern Milan) with the Verbanus Lacus ( Lake Verbano, that is Lake Maggiore, and from here to the pass of the Sempione (lat. Summo Plano).
Located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore, Meina was part of the Community of Vergante, having signed in 1389, together with the municipality of Lesa, the Statues of the Vergante approved by the archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo.
The municipality first follows directly the events of the Duchy of Milan until the middle of the fifteenth century when Filippo Maria Visconti grants the property of Meina, Lesa and the Vergante in Vitaliano I Borromeo.
Meina therefore follows the history of the Borromeo accounts of Arona.
At the end of the 18th century the Community of Vergante was dissolved under the foothold of the Napoleonic armies and the new European order.
Since 1805 Meina, in the Department of Aggna, it is part of the Kingdom of Neapolitan Italy.
At the fall of Napoleone, as in the whole of Vergante, Meina becomes part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, finally of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
Ghevio, already autonomous municipality, is an aggregate in Meina in 1928[4].
Between 15 and 23 September 1943, the town of Meina was the scenery of the slaughter of sixteen Italian Jews from Greece completed by the Nazi SS in the Meina Hotel owned by Alberto Behar, a Turkish citizen of Jewish origin. [5][6] In memory of the slaughter, in 2015 the stumbling stones were laid at the embarcade, close to the place where the Meina hotel was once located.
