CERESOLE REALE
Ceresole Reale's origin is probably Celtic and it is still possible to find traces of the ancient Roman settlements.
The municipality obtained in 1862 the title “reale”, which means “royal” ,from King Vittorio Emanuele II after he obtained the right to hunt freely chamoises and ibexes.
Therefore Ceresole between 1854 and 1864 became the private hunt reserve of the Savoy's king.
In order to ease his hunts, many mule tracks were built ; this allows pleasing and easy walks.
The 3rd December 1922 the royal reserve was gifted to the Italian State in order to be classified and administered as Italian first national park. The Gran Paradiso National Park was born.
The town of Ceresole Reale is at 1613 metres5291 feet elevation, on the shores of the 5km long artificial lake (1236 million cubic feet) offering an enchanting view all over the mountainous landscape, rich of red firs, larches and pines.
From the village, a paved road climbs up to the lakes Serrù and Agnel. At the top of the track is the high-pass of Nivolet, the heart of the park, at 2612 meters8570 feet elevation, one of the highest in Europe.
Visitors and residents can enjoy a different variety of sports: from skiing and ice-skating in winter, to windsurf, kayak, tennis, soccer, beach volley, bocce, game fishing, mountain bikie, and free-climbing activities all over the year. Kids can have fun in the recreation areas and in the green spaces.
Moreover, the National Park offers great excursions from the easiest sightseeing walks to the most demanding and breath taking climbs. In all cases, it's very easy to note that the local fauna is everywhere, since the Gran Paradiso National Park is one of Italian most important protected natural oasis, with animals including chamoises, ibexes, groundhogs, foxes, ermines, white hares, white partridges, and royal eagles.
