Description
HISTORY
Dating back to the early 1900s, the building began as a tobacco manufacturing site. In fact, inside the building we find different spaces, each destined for a different purpose: pressing, drying, packaging and, to meet also the workers with newborn children, the nursing room (see photo). During the Fascist period, the structure was visited by Mussolini himself, in honor of which an effigy was made still visible on the upper part of the structure (see photo). Tobacco production was interrupted in the 1980s due to a serious crisis in the sector.
THE BUILDING
The building extends over 2 floors, with a total area of 650 m².
On the ground floor there are: 4 entrance halls of approximately 80 m² each, with intact star vaults and a further 3 rooms, one of which was used at the time as a breastfeeding room.
On the first floor there are: 12 rooms with access to 2 terraces (one of 150 m² and the other of 60 m²).
The construction requires a major renovation because it lacks facilities, fixtures and paving, but has a good state of preservation from the point of view of the wall structure, especially in reference to the rooms on the ground floor.
LOCATION
The building is located in the historic center of Montesardo, a small town of Alessano (LE), 7 km from the beautiful Salento beaches. The location is strategic as a place of passage to reach many places with a strong tourist impact: beaches on the Ionian coast (Maldives of Salento 10 ’, Gallipoli 20’), cliffs on the Adriatic side (S. M. of Leuca 15 ’, Otranto / Castro 30’), city of art (Lecce 40 ’).
THE POTENTIAL
The architectural beauty that characterizes the façade of the building, combined with the now impossible to find star-shaped features, as well as the central position in which it is located, provide the building with enormous tourist potential. In fact, the building lends itself to being reorganized so as to become a sumptuous hotel or a charming b & b, a typical and elegant restaurant in the heart of Salento, a splendid villa difficult to catalyze the eyes of passers-by.
