Montorgiali , location of the town of Scansano (GR) , is located north - west of the capital and is reached by a short detour along the road to Grosseto.
history
The village was built as a castle after the year one thousand and was controlled by a dynasty of local rulers who , in the course of the thirteenth century , became attached to the family Aldobrandeschi in the second half of the fourteenth century came under the control of the Sienese who managed to conquer other castles the area.
In the mid- sixteenth century, Montorgiali became part of the territory of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and followed its fortunes from that moment onwards.

The castle of Montorgiali
The fortification was built in the twelfth century as a possession of a local family , the counts of Montorgiali , vassal of Santa Fiora branch of Aldobrandeschis . The first reference to the castle and the court of which there are traces is a bull of Pope Clement III dating from 1188, addressed to the bishop of Grosseto Gualfredo , " quicquid juris habes Castle et curte et districtu Montis Orzalis ."
The complex was privately owned until the second half of the fourteenth century , when it became part of the Republic of Siena , following the fortunes of the nearby castles. The accounts of Montorgiali in 1224 they decided to take the side of the Republic of Siena, in the conflict between the latter Aldobrandeschis branch of Santa Fiora , this decision they engaged in several wars , the costs of which forced them to sell some domains surrounding . On December 31, 1378, the castle was finally sold to the Republic of Siena. The Sienese rule ended in the mid sixteenth century when , following the final fall of the Republic was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The castle of Montorgiali is dominant over the entire town, on the right of the church of San Biagio.
Among the building adjacent to the church and the left corner of the castle is a curtain wall made of stone, where you open a door with round arches , above which is placed the coat of arms with the lion of the people of Siena , a ’ other door arched lies on the northern side .
The castle appears as a rustic imposing consists of a series of buildings huddled together ; external walls completely covered in filaretto stone . The windows are arranged on 3 levels , are round-arched , while in some parts of the exterior walls are visible slots and shelves that were used to attack any enemies that come close .
The summit parties have pitched roofs for every single part of the building , each of which covered the classic Tuscan terracotta bricks .
Church of San Biagio
The church of San Biagio is a sacred building located in Montorgiali , in the municipality of Scansano. Laterally alongside the impressive castle complex Montorgiali .
The original building dates back to the Middle Ages, but in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries has undergone radical alterations .
The interior has a single nave the altar and the four sides made of plaster and stucco with a certain accuracy to the late Baroque styles . Note two paintings of the Sienese school of the first half of the seventeenth century : the Birth of the Virgin and the Virgin and Child with St. Joseph in glory.
One of the most important works of the church is the processional banner , attributed to Alexander Casolani , which for preservation has been transferred in Pitigliano in the Diocesan Museum. Of elegant workmanship are to stem the font and the candlestick for the Easter candle in the apse, both seventeenth century .
