In the charming Tuscan countryside of Casole d'Elsa, approximately 30km west of the city of Siena, nestled among gentle hills and dense forests of oak and chestnut trees, lies a small medieval village steeped in millennia of history. Through its ancient walls, it tells the tale of those who have lived in these fairy-tale-like surroundings over the centuries.
Although the place name references Etruscan origins, the earliest records date back to the year 994 when the entire village was gifted by a local nobleman to his wife on the occasion of their marriage. Its proximity to Siena led to its configuration as a castle in the past, forming part of the defensive line along the Montagnola ridge to protect the State of Siena.
The history of this place spans the centuries, reaching into the more recent period when during World War II, local farmers hid a Jewish family from Nazi persecution, falsifying their documents. In 2019, these same farmers were recognized by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem as Righteous Among the Nations.
