Castiglione d’Orcia is a small town immersed in the landscape of the Val d'Orcia and was declared World Heritage Site by Unesco. It is made up of hills and valleys dotted with rows of cypress trees which line the roads. The original town was established by Aldobrandeschi and became a free municipality in 1252. It , then passed under the control of Siena in the 14th century, something that was frequently disputed between the city and the Salimbeni Family. In the town center is Piazza Vecchietta, dedicated to the native artist Lorenzo di Pietro, with various historical wonders such as the church of Santa Maria Maddalena and Santi Stefano e Degna. There is also a small museum located in the former oratory which exhibits paintings by famous painters of the 14th and 15th centuries. Built on a limestone spur dominating the municipality is the Rocca of Tentennano which dates back to the XIII century intended to protect the southern territory of the Sienese state. Nearby are the wonderful Natural and Cultural Artistic Park of the Val d'Orcia, the thermal resort of Bagni di San Filippo and the cave of San Filippo Benizi.
