Mosquito nets on every window Proximity to the Mongiovino Sanctuary The history of the Sanctuary: The sanctuary of the Madonna di Mongiovino is located in Tavernelle, a hamlet of Panicale (PG): it dominates the valley with the large dome and bell tower, under the village of Mongiovino Vecchio. It was designed by the architect Rocco da Vicenza in 1524, following Leo X's approval of prodigious events that would manifest themselves to the shepherdess Andreana. The church has a Greek cross plan:[1] inside, decorated in Corinthian style, four pillars and vaults support the dome. Among the stonemasons who worked on the construction site, the most significant are: Bernardino da Siena and Lorenzo da Carrara. The layout of the sanctuary presents architectural peculiarities of Bramante, even if there is no evidence of actual attribution to the artist from Urbino. Documents from 1872 and a certificate from Cesare Crispolti, kept in the Augusta Library in Perugia, identify the architect as Rocco di Tommaso da Vicenza, active in Spello and here in 1524. The dome was finished in 1528. On the entrance facade you can admire two artistically crafted portals.[2] The interior, square in shape, is embellished with four chapels: of the Resurrection, of the Ascension, of the Virgin, of the Madonna of the Rosary. The frescoes are attributed to Pomarancio (the Resurrection), Orazio Alfani (the delivery of the Rosary), Pierluigi da Perugia and Flemish painters such as Heindrick van den Boroeck and Jan Wrage.[3] The construction of the church ended in 1728. The bell tower, however, was erected in 1775 based on designs by Francesco Tiroli, implemented by Giovan Battista da Lugano.
