HISTORY OF THE COMMON
Located on a height that dominates the Tiber valley, the village of Montecchio still retains the character of a medieval village with its small and curious alleys and the mighty walls of fenced. The history of this territory however begins much more; already in pre-Roman times, in fact, the territory was known and inhabited, as the vast Necropoli of the Vallone di San Lorenzo, discovered in the mid-800s by the archaeologist Domenico Golini.
The first sources written on Montecchio are dated 1154. The original nucleus of the castle dates back to around 1165 by the Chiaravalle family of Todi who withdrew here after the struggles between Guelefi and Ghibelini, while in 1190 he built the second fortified circle, both for a greater defense of the village, and for the increase of the population; the extensions went forward until the middle of the 13th century.
On the possessions of the "Castrum Monticuli" rule there were the Chiaravalle, the Alviano, the Basques and the Colonna; in the sixteenth century it was then the vault of the family of the Acts of Todi, as the names of some streets in the historic center still demonstrate. Starting from 1607 it was under the control of the Corsini.
With the foundation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860 the territory of Montecchio passes under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Baschi and thus remains until 1948 when Montecchio becomes an autonomous municipality with the villages of Tenaglie and Melezzole.
The ancient village, of a slightly elliptic shape, is one of the best preserved medieval centers of the Teverina; in particular, a large part of the perimeter walls with the ancient defense towers and the architectural structure of the old houses are clearly visible.
